ABS filament

A tough engineering plastic that resists impact and heat.

Sample part made from ABSMost popular

What is ABS?

ABS is strong, durable and scratch resistant. These properties make it a popular choice for both prototypes and end products in automotive parts, electronic housings and consumer goods.

Printed in an enclosed printer. For continuous heat exposure, consider its heat rating.

  • Heat resistant
  • Economical
  • Impact strength

High Izod impact strength; a tough engineering plastic for clips, brackets, housings and fixtures.

  • Heat resistance

With a heat deflection temperature of about 73 °C, it performs much better than PLA in warm environments.

  • Post-processing

Can be sanded, drilled, glued and painted; suitable for cosmetic surfaces.

  • For indoor use

UV resistance is limited; ASA is recommended for parts exposed to sunlight for long periods.

Design guidelines for ABS

General guidelines for FDM technology. All design guidelines

  • Production accuracy at TAݱ0.5% (lower limit ±0.5 mm)
  • Minimum wall thickness0.8 mm (supported)
  • Unsupported wall1.2 mm
  • Smallest detail0.4 mm
  • Clearance for moving parts0.4 mm (normal fit)
  • Text and logosEmbossed ≥ 0.6 mm, engraved ≥ 0.8 mm
  • Minimum hole diameterØ 2 mm
  • Unsupported overhang angle≥ 45° from horizontal; flatter surfaces need support

Applications

  • Automotive parts
  • Electronic housings
  • Toys and consumer products
  • End-use parts

Advantages

  • Resists impact and heat
  • Easy post-processing: sanding, painting and acetone vapor smoothing
  • Proven material in automotive and electronics

Limitations

  • Requires an enclosure; prone to warping
  • Yellows and becomes brittle under UV (ASA is preferred outdoors)
  • Odor and emissions while printing

Frequently asked questions about ABS

What is ABS?

ABS is strong, durable and scratch resistant. These properties make it a popular choice for both prototypes and end products in automotive parts, electronic housings and consumer goods.

Is ABS heat resistant?

The heat deflection temperature (0.45 MPa) of ABS is about 73 °C. This is moderate; enough for everyday use and warm environments.

Can ABS be used outdoors?

It can degrade under prolonged sunlight and UV light. For outdoor use, ASA or another UV-resistant material should be preferred.

Which parts are made with ABS?

ABS is typically used in applications such as automotive parts, electronic housings, toys and consumer products, end-use parts.

Which material can be used instead of ABS?

Depending on the application, ASA, PC, PC-ABS can be alternatives. You can see the differences in the comparison tables on the material pages.
