PVA filament

A water-soluble support filament for internal channels and complex overhangs.

Sample part made from PVA

What is PVA?

PVA is printed as a support together with low-temperature filaments such as PLA and PETG in dual-nozzle printers. After printing it dissolves in warm water, cleaning out complex internal geometries without leaving support marks. It is not used as a part material.

Design guidelines for PVA

General guidelines for FDM technology. All design guidelines

  • Production accuracy at TAݱ0.5% (lower limit ±0.5 mm)
  • Minimum wall thickness0.8 mm (supported)
  • Unsupported wall1.2 mm
  • Smallest detail0.4 mm
  • Clearance for moving parts0.4 mm (normal fit)
  • Text and logosEmbossed ≥ 0.6 mm, engraved ≥ 0.8 mm
  • Minimum hole diameterØ 2 mm
  • Unsupported overhang angle≥ 45° from horizontal; flatter surfaces need support

Applications

  • Soluble support
  • Prototypes with internal channels

Advantages

  • Dissolves in water without a trace
  • Enables geometries impossible without support

Limitations

  • Highly moisture sensitive
  • Expensive
  • Not a part material

Frequently asked questions about PVA

What is PVA?

PVA is printed as a support together with low-temperature filaments such as PLA and PETG in dual-nozzle printers. After printing it dissolves in warm water, cleaning out complex internal geometries without leaving support marks. It is not used as a part material.

Is PVA heat resistant?

The heat deflection value of PVA varies by grade and application; for parts working in hot environments, you can consult our engineers.

Can PVA be used outdoors?

It can degrade under prolonged sunlight and UV light. For outdoor use, ASA or another UV-resistant material should be preferred.

Which parts are made with PVA?

PVA is typically used in applications such as soluble support, prototypes with internal channels.

Which material can be used instead of PVA?

Depending on the application, HIPS can be alternatives. You can see the differences in the comparison tables on the material pages.
