How to Choose the Right Filament: PLA, PETG, ABS and ASA

Heat, impact, outdoors, flexibility… A practical guide to choosing the best filament for the conditions your part will face.

First, think about where the part will work

The most important question in choosing a material is the conditions the part will be used in: in the sun, in a hot engine bay, in a place where it is constantly bent? The answer quickly narrows the options.

PLA: fast and economical

PLA is the easiest and most economical filament to print. It is ideal for visual prototypes, models and decorative LED products. With a heat deflection temperature of about 53 °C, it is not suitable for hot environments.

PETG: the balanced choice for everyday use

PETG resists impact, water and chemicals. Its high elongation at break lets it flex without breaking. It is a good choice for enclosures, brackets and parts working in humid environments.

ABS and ASA: heat and outdoors

With a heat deflection temperature of about 73 °C and high impact strength, ABS suits automotive interior parts and electronic housings. For parts used outdoors, ASA stands out with its resistance to UV and weather; it does not yellow or fade in the sun.

Special needs

  • Flexibility and shock absorption: TPU 95A
  • High heat and impact: PC
  • High strength and heat: carbon fiber reinforced nylon (PA-CF, PA12-CF)
  • Stiffness: carbon/glass fiber reinforced PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA
  • Chemicals and high temperature: PPA-CF, PPS-CF
  • Soluble supports: PVA and BVOH
