Spare Parts with Reverse Engineering and 3D Scanning

A discontinued or impossible-to-find part can be reproduced with 3D scanning, modeling and 3D printing. How does the process work, step by step?

When the part cannot be found

When a small plastic part of a machine breaks, it is common to learn that the part is no longer made. Reverse engineering means starting from the existing part to create its digital model and produce it again.

The process step by step

  • 3D scanning: the part is scanned and digitized.
  • Modeling: the scan data is turned into a dimensioned, manufacturable CAD model.
  • Improvement: the broken area is reinforced and the design improved if needed.
  • Production: the part is 3D printed in a suitable material.
  • Quality control: the part is measured and delivered.

Which material?

The material is chosen for the environment the spare part will work in: ASA outdoors, ABS or PC where it is exposed to heat, TPU for flexible parts and reinforced filaments such as PA-CF where high strength is needed.

Why 3D printing?

Even a single part can be produced economically without mold costs. Since the model is stored digitally, it can be reprinted whenever you need it.
